It is given that, D and E are respectively the points on the sides AB and AC of

ΔABC,

A B = 5.6 c m

A D = 1.4 c m, A C = 7.2 c m

and,

A E = 1.8 cm

After observing the figure, we can write that,

B D = A B − A D

Substituting the values of the given sides,

B D = 5.6 − 1.4 B D = 4.2

Similarly,

E C = A C − A E

E C = 7.2 − 1.8 E C = 5.4

We can write that,

A D D B = 1.4 4.2 A D D B = 13

A E E C = 1.8 5.4 A E E C = 13

Since the ratios are equal, we can write that,

A D D B = A E E C

Therefore,

D E ∥ B C
