Dantidurga, a Rashtrakuta chief, overthrew his Chalukya overlord and performed a ritual called Hiranya-Garbha. When this ritual was performed with the help of Brahmanas, it was thought that the sacrificer would take a "rebirth" as a Kshatriya, even if he had never been one before. In other cases, men from affluent families used their military skills to found kingdoms. The Kadamba Mayurasharman and the GurjaraPratihara Harichandra are two examples of Brahmanas who turned to armed conflict in place of their traditional occupations and were successful in establishing kingdoms in Karnataka and Rajasthan.
