Dantidurga became a Kshatriya by performing the Hiranya Garbha ritual. He was Karnataka's Samanta. While not a member of the Kshatriya clan, Dantidurga was the senior commander of the Rashtrakutas and aspired to dominate. He overthrew the Chalukyas' king to take control of Karnataka. The would-be monarch, who was not a Kshatriya by birth, performed the hiranya garbha, or golden womb, rite. Brahmins assisted in performing this rite. The non-Kshatriya performer was thought to have been reincarnated as a Kshatriya after conducting this ceremony.
