Dantidurga was the ruler of Karnataka. By ousting the monarch of the Chalukyas, he took power. The Rashtrakutas dynasty was founded by Dantivarman or Dantidurga (735–756). All of the areas between the Godavari and the Vima were ruled by Dantidurga. By fighting Chalukya King Kirtivarma, he is supposed to have taken control of Kalinga, Kosala, Kanchi, Srisril, Malava, Lata, etc. and occupied Maharashtra. It is believed that Dantidurga, who belonged to a non-Kshatriya clan, was reincarnated as a Kshatriya after executing the hiranya garbha ritual and was thus qualified to rule as a monarch.
