Detailed Solution

Aerobic respiration is the process by which cells produce energy using oxygen. In this process, glucose combines with oxygen to release energy in the form of ATP, along with carbon dioxide and water as by-products. Aerobic respiration takes place inside the mitochondria of the cell. It is called “aerobic” because it requires air or oxygen. This process is the main source of energy for most living organisms, including humans, animals, and many plants.

Steps of Aerobic Respiration

  1. Glycolysis – Glucose is broken down into pyruvate in the cytoplasm.
  2. Krebs Cycle – Pyruvate is further broken down to release electrons.
  3. Electron Transport Chain – Electrons combine with oxygen to produce ATP.

General Equation

Glucose (C6H12O6) + Oxygen (O2) → Carbon dioxide (CO2) + Water (H2O) + Energy (ATP)

Example

When humans eat food like rice or bread, glucose from the food undergoes aerobic respiration in cells, releasing energy needed for walking, running, or even thinking.
