Internal respiration is the exchange of gases between the blood and body tissues, where oxygen moves from blood to cells and carbon dioxide moves from cells to blood.

After oxygen enters the blood through the lungs, it travels via arteries to the body tissues. Here, oxygen diffuses into cells for energy production, and carbon dioxide (a waste product of metabolism) diffuses back into the blood to be carried to the lungs for removal.
