Delacroix depicted the Massacre at Chios in his painting during 1824. Delacroix, a French painter, was one of France's most famous Romantic painters. The massive painting "The Massacre at Chios" depicts an occurrence on the Greek island of Chios in which 20,000 Greeks were supposed to have been slaughtered by Turks. Delacroix strived to appeal to the emotions of the audience and evoke sympathy for the Greeks by exaggerating the incident, focusing on pain of women and children, and using vibrant colours. Ottoman forces launched a military attack against the people of Chios on April 12, 1822, and continued for many months into the summer of that year. The operation resulted in the demise of 20,000 civilians.
