Delhi first became a kingdom’s capital under Tomara Rajputs. At the beginning of the twelfth century, Delhi was recognised as an important city. Under the rule of the Tomara Rajputs, it became the capital of a kingdom for the first time. After defeating the Tomara Rajputs in the mid-twelfth century, the Chahamanas, or Chauhans of Ajmer, took control of Delhi. Under the Tomara Rajputs and the Chauhans, the city became a commercial powerhouse. Wealthy Jaina merchants lived in the city back then and became famous for the temples they built there. With the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate at the beginning of the thirteenth century, Delhi began its metamorphosis into a capital city whose control stretched throughout various subcontinent.
