"Demand for Indian Textiles could never reduce because no country produced goods of the same quality." Henry Patullo said these words. A company officer dared to assert in 1772 that since no other country produced goods of the same calibre, demand for Indian textiles could never decline. But from the beginning of the nineteenth century, we saw the beginning of a long decline in India's textile exports. Piece goods made up 33% of India's exports in 1811–12; by 1850–51, they made up little more than 3%.
