Detailed Solution

Depletion of ozone in the atmosphere can lead to an increased incidence of skin cancers. Ozone in the stratosphere is a protective shield against UV radiation. Ozone degradation has increased recently due to the increased emission of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). It resulted in the formation of an ozone hole. UV radiation of wavelengths shorter than UV-B is almost completely absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere, given that the ozone layer is intact. But, UV-B damages DNA, and mutation may occur. It causes aging of the skin, damage to skin cells, and various types of skin cancers.
