PREPARATIONS :
1) Ethyl chloride on heating with alcoholic KOH gives ethylene.

2) Ethanol is treated with conc. H₂SO₄ to give ethylene

PROPERTIES :
a) Reaction with O₃ (Ozonolysis) :
Ethylene react with ozone to form two moles of farmaldehyde in presence of Zn/H₂O.

b) With Baeyer’s reagent :
Ethylene is treated with dilute alkaline KMnO₄ (Baeyer’s reagent) to form ethylene glycol.

c) Reaction with water :
Ethylene react with water in presence of concentrated sulphuric acid gives ethyl alcohol.
