Helical viruses are a type of virus that have a helical (spiral) shape. The virus's genetic material, which can be either RNA or DNA, is coiled in a spiral within a protein sheath, creating a rod-like or cylindrical structure.

The protein coat that surrounds the genetic material is made up of repeating subunits called capsomers. These capsomers are arranged in a helical pattern, giving the virus its characteristic shape. The most well-known examples of helical viruses are the Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) and the Rabies Virus.

Helical viruses are often found infecting plants and animals. Their helical structure allows them to have a very efficient and stable configuration, which helps them to survive outside their host and easily infect new cells.
