Detailed Solution

There has been a substantial decrease in poverty in India from about 55 per cent in 1973 to 36 per cent in 1993. The people below the poverty line also showed a positive reduction to about 26 per cent in 2000. If India continues to care for the poor, the ratio will decrease to less than 20 per cent in the upcoming years. Although the percentage of people living below poverty has shown a good result, unfortunately, the number of poor people has remained at around 320 million for a fairly long period. Only the latest calculation shows a significant reduction in the poor to about 26 million.
