Detritivores are organisms that consume dead organic matter, or detritus, and break it down into smaller particles. This process is called fragmentation, as the detritivore physically break up the detritus into smaller pieces. These smaller particles can then be further broken down by other decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi.

(3) Humification refers to the breakdown of organic matter into humus, a stable form of organic matter that can persist in soil for long periods of time.

Fragmentation is one aspect of decomposition that involves the physical breakdown of detritus by detritivores, while decomposition also encompasses the enzymatic breakdown of organic compounds by other microbes.
