Detailed Solution

Devadana is the land gifted to temples. The majority of the Devdana lands were exempted from paying taxes. The donated land primarily belonged to the temple, which hired peasants to cultivate the property in exchange for money. The temple then took possession of the crops grown on the land and sold them. There were other types of land grants mentioned in Chola inscriptions, like shalabhoga land for the maintenance of a school; devadana, tirunamattukkani land gifted to temples; pallichchhandam land donated to Jaina institutions.
