Detailed Solution

Dhamma is the Prakrit word for the Sanskrit term Dharma. Ashoka's dhamma did not include any form of worship or sacrifice. He believed that, just as a father tries to teach his children, he owed it to his subjects to instruct them. The Buddha's teachings also influenced him. Several issues bothered him. People in the empire practised various religions, which occasionally led to conflict. Animals were slaughtered. Slaves and servants were abused. There were also disagreements within families and among neighbours. Ashoka felt it was his responsibility to solve these issues. As a result, he appointed officials known as dhamma mahamatta, who travelled from place to place teaching people about dhamma.
