Dhangar is an important pastoralist community in Maharashtra. It was believed that there were 4,675,000 Dhangars in this area at the turn of the 20th century. Most of them were shepherds, while others made blankets and nursed buffalo. Throughout the monsoon, the Dhangar shepherds remained on the central plateau of Maharashtra. It was a semi-arid region with limited precipitation and poor soil. It was overgrown with thorny plants. Here, only dry crops such as Bajra could be grown. Alternating monsoon and dry seasons affected the Dhangars of Maharashtra in terms of seasonal variation.
