Dhangars were an important community in Maharashtra. They were thought to number 467,000 in this area around the turn of the 20th century. Most of them were shepherds, but others worked as blanket weavers or buffalo herders. The Dhangar shepherds remained on the Maharashtra plateau's central plateau during the monsoon.
