The reagent dimethylglyoxime (DMG) is a very famous organic compound used in qualitative analysis.

In alkaline medium, DMG reacts specifically with nickel (Ni²⁺ ions).

When DMG is added to a solution containing Ni²⁺ (and made alkaline with ammonia), it forms a bright red-pink colored chelate complex called nickel dimethylglyoximate.

This reaction is highly selective, meaning it works almost only for nickel, so it is a confirmatory test for Ni²⁺.
