Detailed Solution

Stem cells come in different “power levels.” The main types are pluripotent stem cells (like embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells) and adult stem cells (also called somatic or tissue-specific stem cells). Their biggest difference lies in what they can become and where they come from.

Pluripotent stem cells can turn into almost any cell type in the body — muscle, nerve, blood, skin, even brain cells. They are like a blank template capable of forming all tissues. Embryonic stem cells found in early embryos are naturally pluripotent, while induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are adult cells reprogrammed in labs to act like embryonic ones. Because of their wide potential, they’re powerful for studying diseases and testing new drugs.

Adult stem cells, by contrast, have more limited options. They are found in tissues like bone marrow, skin, or the intestine and can only form certain related cells. For instance, bone marrow stem cells make blood cells but not neurons. Their main job is tissue maintenance — replacing cells lost to wear and tear or injury.

Functionally, pluripotent stem cells focus on creation and flexibility, while adult stem cells focus on repair and stability. However, adult stem cells are less likely to cause tumors or ethical issues, making them safer for therapies.

In medicine, pluripotent cells hold promise for creating replacement organs or treating degenerative diseases, while adult stem cells already support therapies such as bone marrow transplants. Both types are vital: one for discovery, the other for practical healing today.
