Detailed Solution

Metamorphosis is a biological process of transformation. The key difference lies in the change in complexity between the larval and adult stages.

Progressive Metamorphosis

  • Definition: A transformation from a simpler larval form to a more complex and advanced adult form.
  • Change in Complexity: The adult organism gains new, more sophisticated structures and organs.
  • Examples:
    • Insects (Holometabolism): A simple, worm-like larva (e.g., caterpillar, maggot) transforms into a complex adult (e.g., butterfly, fly) with wings, compound eyes, antennae, and functional reproductive organs.
    • Amphibians: A gilled, aquatic tadpole with a two-chambered heart and a tail transforms into a lung-breathing, terrestrial or semi-aquatic frog with a three-chambered heart and four limbs.

Retrogressive Metamorphosis

  • Definition: A transformation from a more complex and advanced larval form to a simpler, often "degenerate," adult form.
  • Change in Complexity: The adult organism loses or severely reduces advanced structures that were present in the larva.
  • Examples:
    • Tunicates (Sea Squirts): A free-swimming, tadpole-like larva with a notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, and sensory organs transforms into a sessile, bag-like adult that has lost all of these "advanced" chordate features.
    • Parasitic Crustaceans (e.g., Sacculina): A free-swimming nauplius larva that looks like a typical crustacean settles on a host and metamorphoses into a formless, sac-like body that lives inside its host, having lost its limbs, segmentation, and most organs.
