In ascomycetes and basidiomycetes plasmogamy is instantly not followed by karyogamy. There is the presence of an intervening dikaryotic stage (n + n, i.e., two nuclei per cell); such a condition is called a dikaryon and the phase is called dikaryophase of fungus.
