The atmosphere is vital because it shields life from harmful radiation, supplies breathable oxygen, moderates temperature, and supports weather, water, and life cycles.

A protective blanket

Earth's atmosphere filters dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays using the ozone layer, absorbs cosmic particles, and burns up most meteoroids before they can hit the ground.

Temperature regulation

Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane trap some outgoing heat, keeping average surface temperature around 15^oC. Without this greenhouse effect, Earth would be a frozen desert like Mars.
