Meiosis has two divisions—Meiosis I (reductional) and Meiosis II (equational, mitosis-like). Crossing over occurs in Meiosis I.

Meiosis I (reductional division):

Prophase I (five substages):
- Leptotene: Chromosomes condense; sister chromatids not yet distinctly visible.
- Zygotene: Homologous chromosomes pair (synapsis); the synaptonemal complex begins forming.
- Pachytene: SC is fully formed; crossing over (exchange of segments) occurs at recombination nodules.
- Diplotene: SC disassembles; homologs begin to separate but remain connected at chiasmata (the X-shaped crossover sites).
- Diakinesis: Chromosomes further condense; chiasmata terminalize toward the ends.
