Diwani means the right to collect land revenue for particular regions.
The grant of Diwani was popular in the Mughal era. The British arrived in India and settled in Bengal. The Battle of Plassey and the Battle of Buxar presented the British as a growing power in the east. The Mughal emperor, in 1765, granted Diwani rights to the company. The Diwani of Bengal, Bihar, and  Orissa were granted to the Company. It became the chief administrative authority of the given regions. They aimed to expand themselves in the Indian territories to acquire economic gains. The Diwani rights helped the company to meet expenses by the revenues.
