Caterpillar Eyes:

A caterpillar (larva) does not have compound eyes. Instead, it has a set of 12 very simple eyes called stemmata (or lateral ocelli). These are arranged in a small semi-circle of 6 stemmata on each side of its head.

These simple eyes cannot form a complex image. They are used primarily to detect the direction and intensity of light. This helps the caterpillar find food (by sensing the dark shape of a leaf against the bright sky) and avoid predators.

Adult Butterfly Eyes:

The adult butterfly has two large compound eyes, made of thousands of ommatidia. These complex eyes are necessary for its new lifestyle, which involves flying, navigating long distances, finding specific flowers, and recognizing the colors and patterns of potential mates.

During the pupa (chrysalis) stage, the simple stemmata are completely broken down, and the brand-new, complex compound eyes are built from scratch.
