Dr B.R. Ambedkar is known as the father of the Indian constitution.
He is the most renowned leader of the Dalits. Dr Ambedkar fought for equal rights for the Dalit community. He believed that Dalits must fight against the caste system and work towards attaining equal status in society. He was born into the "untouchable" Mahar caste. Ambedkar was the first person from his caste to complete a college education and become a lawyer. He encouraged Dalits to educate, organise, and agitate for their rights. He fought for temple entry rights for the Dalits. He later converted to Buddhism, considering it a religion that treated all its members equally, unlike Brahmanical Hinduism.
