In 1930, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar organized the community into the Depressed Classes Association. He represented the group at the Second Round Table Conference. From around the 1930s, the untouchable people of the society started calling themselves the Dalits, which meant oppressed. Despite the efforts of Gandhiji to abandon the practice of untouchability, many Dalit leaders felt these measures were ineffective in alleviating their problems. So they started to organize themselves, demanding reserved seats in educational institutions and political empowerment through separate electorates.
