Gаndhiji decided to start a national Sаtyаgrаhа against the proposed Rоwlаtt Aсt in 1919. Despite the unanimous opposition of the Indian members, this bill was rushed through the Imperial Legislative Council. It equipped the government with enormous power to repress political activities and allowed the detention of political prisoners without trial for two years. Hence, Mahаtma Gandhi called for nonviolent civil disobedience against such unjust laws, which he said would begin with a hartal on 6 April. As a result, rallies were organised in various cities; railway workers went on strike, and shops closed down. Consequently, the British government decided to crack down on nationalists.
