Due to the First World War, forced recruitment increased in India.
A new political and economic environment was established during the First World War. Defense spending increased significantly, and war loans and higher taxes financed this. Along with the implementation of income tax, customs taxes were raised. During the war years, prices increased, making a living quite challenging for the ordinary populace. The communities were asked for soldiers. Forced recruitment created a great deal of animosity in rural regions. In various parts of India, severe food shortages caused by crop failure made life for the average person intolerable in 1918–19 and 1920–21.
