In a literal sense, irrigation means providing additional water to the crops when the requirement is not met with rainfall. For ages, agriculture has been practised in India, but there were many places where agriculture was impossible. But after the advent of the Green Revolution, the growth of such crops in certain areas became possible. The annual rainfall for rice cultivation is above 100 cm, which is impossible in states like Punjab and Haryana. Still, irrigational facilities made it possible to grow rice in these states.
