The muscles whose functioning is regulated by the conscious mind are called voluntary muscles. The skeletal muscles are voluntary muscles. They are long cylindrical, multinucleated, striated, and unbranched. These features allow them to perform strenuous tasks.

During cycling when a person pushes the paddle of the cycle up and down, he uses the skeletal muscles of his legs to perform the task. He can consciously increase or decrease the speed of the cycle as per his need.

Cardiac muscles and smooth muscles are involuntary muscles and cannot be controlled by the conscious mind.
