During the early 19th century in north India, the ulama were deeply anxious about the collapse of Muslim dynasties. They feared that the colonial authorities would encourage religious conversion and change Muslim personal law. So, they printed religious booklets and tracts, as well as Persian and Urdu translations of sacred texts, using inexpensive lithographic printers to fix this. The Deoband Seminary has written several fatwas since it was founded in 1867, educating Muslim readers on the right conduct in daily life and outlining the importance of Islamic teachings. Several Muslim sects and schools emerged during the nineteenth century, each with its own interpretation of the faith.
