During the Chola period, numerous ways of land irrigation were developed in the Tamil region.
Many new channels were made from the Kaveri river for irrigation of fields. These channels carried fertile soil with which agriculture productivity increased on the banks of these canals in the delta region; small embankments were made to prevent flooding. In addition, artificial methods were used for irrigation. In some areas, wells were dug, and in some places, huge tanks were made for collecting rainwater.
