During the 1830s, Giuseppe Mazzini tried to unite Italy. He formed a secret society called Young Italy. He took part in the Piedmont Republican Uprising in 1834. Mazzini wished to unite Italy into a unitary republic. This union, he argued, was the sole foundation of Italian independence. Giuseppe Mazzini believed that God created countries to be the natural units of humanity. He was exiled in 1831 at 24 for attempting a revolution in Liguria. Giuseppe Mazzini afterwards founded two additional Underground groups. Mazzini founded Young Italy in Marseilles to disseminate his aims.
