Detailed Solution

During the Delhi Sultanate period, tax on cultivation was called kharaj, amounting to about 50 per cent of the peasant's produce. The state took over the assessment and collection of land revenue under Alauddin Khalji. The local chieftains were made to pay taxes in addition to losing their ability to levy taxes. The sultan's officials measured the property and maintained accurate records. Old chieftains and landowners acted as revenue collectors and assessors for the sultanate. There were three different kinds of taxes: one on agriculture, called kharaj, which amounted to around 50% of the produce of the peasantry; another on cattle; and a third on homes.
