Louis XVI, a member of the royal Bourbon line, took the throne of France in 1774. The Treasury welcomed him with an open door. The protracted period of battles and devastation was one of the numerous causes of the empty coffers. France assisted the thirteen American colonies in freeing themselves from their shared enemy, the British, under the reign of Louis XVI. Lenders were giving the state credit and started adding a 10% interest rate to loans. Later, three states were created inside the French Society.
