During the megalithic period, portholes were used for assembling dead bodies. Megalithic burials (large stone burials) occasionally housed multiple skeletons. These show that individuals, possibly from the same family, were buried there, but not simultaneously. Through the portholes, the remains of those who passed away were buried in the grave. People may have used stone circles or boulders placed on the ground as signposts to locate the burial location so they could come back anytime they desired.
