During the mid-19th century, Italy was divided into Seven states.
1)      Initially, Italy was divided into 7 different states.
2)      Sardinia Piedmont was under the King's control. The Austrian Habsburg governed the northern region of Italy under the pope. In comparison, the Spanish rulers ruled over South Italy.
3)      In 1831, Giuseppe Mazzini failed to unify Italy. One of the reasons was there were too many dialects in Italy.
4)      Later, the responsibility of unifying Italy came on the shoulder of King Victor Emmanuel II.
5)      Chief Minister of Sardinia-Piedmont, Count Camillo de Cavour, played a significant role in unifying Italy. He engineered a careful diplomatic alliance with France. Further, it was joined by Giuseppe Garibaldi.
