Detailed Solution

During the mid-19th century, Italy was divided into 7 states.
Italy was split into seven states that were each ruled by a different dynasty in the middle of the nineteenth century. The Pope governed the central part of Italy; the Austrian Habsburgs ruled the north, and the Spanish Bourbons ruled the south. The Italian dynasty only held power in Sardinia-Piedmont. Political disunity was a long-standing phenomenon in Italy. Italy's incorporation into a nation-state, therefore, was extremely difficult.
