  • During the polymerization of ethylene, the hybridization of 'C' changes from sp2 to sp3.
  • In the monomer, ethylene (C2H4), the carbon atoms have a hybridization of sp2
  • Each carbon atom in the ethylene molecule is bonded to three atoms (two hydrogen atoms and one carbon atom), and there is one unhybridized p orbital on each carbon atom that overlaps with the p orbital on the other carbon atom to form a π bond.
  • During polymerization, many ethylene molecules undergo addition polymerization to form long chains of polyethylene.
  • In polyethylene, the carbon atoms have a hybridization of sp3, which means that each carbon atom is bonded to four other atoms (three carbon atoms and one hydrogen atom).
  • This hybridization allows the carbon atoms to form tetrahedral geometry and results in a linear polymer chain.
