Detailed Solution

During the Revolt of 1857, Mangal Pandey was stationed at Barrackpore. The first significant episode of the Indian, or Sepoy Mutiny, occurred on March 29, 1857, when Indian soldier Mangal Pandey attacked British officers. When Mangal Pandey was assigned to the Barrackpore garrison in the middle of the 1850s, a new Enfield rifle that allowed a soldier to load the weapon by biting off the ends of greased cartridges was brought to India. There was a rumour that the lubricant was either pig or cow lard, which was unpopular with Muslims and Hindus. The sepoys eventually believed that the British intentionally added animal lard to the cartridges to downgrade their religions.
