Detailed Solution

During the Second World War, the Defense of India Act was passed, allowing the censoring of reports.
The print culture helped the growth of nationalism across India. Newspapers, specifically the vernacular newspapers, dauntlessly criticized the colonial government and its officials and spread the message of nationalism. Laws were enacted to ensure rigorous control over the newspapers encouraging people to rebel against the British. But their proliferation across the country could not be stopped. The elimination of freedom of the press resulted in more protests, leading to the militant activities of Indians. At the commencement of the Second World War in 1939, the government passed the Defence of India Act to suppress the press. This was a way to keep the nationalist movement in check while they were busy fighting.
