Detailed Solution

During Lord Lytton generalship, the vernacular press act was passed. British India passed the Vernacular Press Act in 1878 to restrict the freedom of the Indian-language (i.e., non-English) press. Under the governor generalship of Lord Lytton, He served as viceroy of India from 1876 to 1880. Its goal was to stop the local press from criticising British policy, particularly the resistance that had arisen with the start of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–80). The law did not apply to publications in English. Strong and ongoing demonstrations were launched against it by a variety of Indian citizens. Lord Ripon, Lytton's successor as viceroy, revoked the statute in 1881.
