Detailed Solution

Dutch began to control forests in the 18th century. Without their knowledge, harvesting teak and constructing the emperors' palaces would have been difficult. When the Mataram kingdom was partitioned in 1755, the 6000 Kalang families were split evenly between the two kingdoms. When the Dutch took over the forests in the 18th century, they sought to make the Kalangs work for them. However, the Kalangs reneged surrendering and launched an attack on the Dutch fort at Joana. Around 1890, Surontiko Samin of Randublatung village, a teak forest settlement, began challenging the state's control of forests. His sons-in-law and almost 3000 households pitched in to assist him.
