Dwarkanath Tagore made his fortunes through China trade.
The China trade refers to the opium trade with China. Opium was grown in India and transported to China by British merchants. Many Indians also played a role as junior players in China Trade and earned great profits. Dwarkanath Tagore was a businessman from Bengal who attained fortune through China trade. He was one of the early entrepreneurs of India. He established six joint stock companies in India in the 1830s and 1840s. He believed in westernisation and industrialization. He opined that only these two could develop India. He was involved in various ventures such as shipbuilding, banking, mining, plantation, shipping, and insurance.
