Dwarkanath Tagore was an industrialist.
He was the first Indian industrialist who formed an enterprise in partnership with the Britishers. Dwarka Nath Tagore was the grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore. He used to trade with China and made himself fortunate. He also established joint-stock companies in the 1830s and 1840s. He was a western educated Bengali brahmin and a civilised leader of Calcutta. He also purchased the first Indian coal mine at Raniganj. In 1829, he became the first Indian bank director. He also founded Union bank in Calcutta in 1829. His company also managed massive Zamindari estates of today's West Bengal, Odisha, and Bangladesh.
