Dwarkanath Tagore was an Indian industrialist.
He established six combined companies in the 1830s and 1840s before switching from industrial investment to the Chinese trade, where he gained his money. According to Dwarkanath Tagore, industrialisation and westernisation would be the key to India's growth. He invested in mining, banking, plantations, insurance, shipping, and shipbuilding. In addition, he was involved in coal, tea, and jute, as well as sugar refining, newspapers, and shipping. He was the first Indian to be appointed as a bank director in 1828. His first Anglo-Indian (Indian and British) commercial company, Carr, Tagore, and Company, was established in 1834 by him and his business associates.
