Dwarkanath Tagore was an industrialist. He was a well-known social figure in Kolkata who pioneered the establishment of several economic ventures in collaboration with British traders, including banking, insurance, and shipping. Before becoming an industrial investor, he built a fortune in Chinese trade. In the 1830s and 1840s, he founded six joint-stock firms. The British in India started shipping opium and importing tea from China in the late 18th century. This transaction involved a lot of Indian merchants. Dwarkanath Tagore, Dinshaw Petit, Jamsetjee Nusserwanjee Tata, Shiv Narayan Birla (grandfather of GD Birla), Seth Hukumchand, and others were notable 19th-century industrialists.
