Detailed Solution

Elections are held every 5 years for the panchayat and the Municipality.
According to the Constitution, elections are held once every five years for municipalities and panchayats. This provision is mandatory for all the states and the Union Territories. Voting is held based on a universal adult franchise, and people can contest elections after the age of 21 years. Districts in a state are divided into wards. People of each ward choose their representatives (known as Ward Councillors). Ward councillors have the power to elect the chairman from among themselves. Sarpanch is the head of the panchayat in the village. There are more than six lakh villages in the whole of India.
